Reading at Boxgrove

Reading at Boxgrove

As soon as children become part of our school, they are encouraged to develop a love of all
kinds of books. Each classroom has a good selection of reading materials and an exciting bok
corner, which expose children to a variety of genres.

There are also boxes of books which are ‘colour coded’ using the Cliff Moon book banding
system. Each colour band contains a variety of book publishers and genres. Children are able
to choose their own books from within their colour band and are encouraged to share these
books at home with their families. Parents are encouraged to comment when and how their
child is reading using a record book provided by the school.

At least once a week, children read a text in a differentiated ‘guided group’ with an adult.
Before reading the adult will share the learning focus with the group. This allows the
children to concentrate on one of the many aspects of reading, such as decoding strategies
or comprehension.

During the school day we have adult volunteer ‘Reading Buddies’ who support specific children
on a 1:1 basis. The volunteers are a selection of parents, grandparents and members of the
local community who read with the same child weekly for a short 10 minute session.
